If you are getting your NSW boat licence, the total cost depends on how you choose to prepare.
There are three common paths:
- attend a face-to-face course
- self-study on your own
- complete an online preparation course
The process is slightly different for each one. That is where a lot of people get confused.
This guide explains the costs and the process, so you can choose the right path before paying for anything. For more information on the 3-ways to get your licence, click here.
The two parts people need to understand
Getting your NSW boat licence involves:
- preparing for the boating knowledge test
- passing the test
- completing a boat practical or completing the short log book (available from Services)
- paying the government fee for the licence once you pass
The main difference is where you sit the test.
Option 1. Face-to-face boat licence course (from $380)
If you attend a face-to-face course with an approved provider, you generally complete the training and sit the test through that provider.
Once you pass, you then take your application paperwork to Service NSW and pay the government licence fee.
This option suits people who want in-person instruction, but it is usually the higher-cost path.
Option 2. Self-study (from $123)
If you choose to study on your own, you must book and sit the boating knowledge test at Service NSW.
That means your process is:
- study on your own via the Boating Handbook
- sit the test at Service NSW
- pay the licence fee once you pass
This can look cheaper at first, but many people find it harder without structure or practice questions.
Option 3. Online boat licence preparation course (from $183)
If you complete an online prep course, the process is similar to self-study, except you have guided learning before the test. We’ve been training Boat Licence for more than 5 years, so we cover everything you need in our online course.
The process is:
- complete your online video preparation course
- sit the official test at Service NSW
- pay the licence fee once you pass
This gives people a more flexible and affordable path than many face-to-face courses, while still helping them prepare properly before the test.
What does it actually cost?
The total cost of getting your NSW boat licence depends on how you choose to prepare before sitting your test. Remember this is the theory only, you will need a log book completed. More details on the log book here.
Face-to-face course (with test included) – no practical log book required
- Course and test: around $300
- Licence fee: $80 to $701
Total: from $380+
This includes training and testing in one session, but it is usually the highest cost option.
Self-study – log book required
- Test fee (Service NSW): $43
- Licence fee: $80 to $701
Total: from $123
This is the lowest upfront cost, but many people find it harder without structure and may need to retake the test.
Online preparation course – log book required
- Online course and quizzes: $59.99
- Test fee (Service NSW): $43
- Licence fee: $80 to $701
Total: from $182.99
This gives you a structured way to prepare before sitting your test, without the higher cost of a face-to-face course.
Key point
The licence fee is the same no matter which path you choose.
The difference in total cost comes down to how you prepare before the test.
What are the government fees?
If you self-study or complete an online prep course, these are the test fees paid at Service NSW:
- boat licence test: $43
- PWC test: $21
- combined boat and PWC test: $64
Once you pass, you then pay the licence application fee (you pay this fee if you do a face-2-face course aswell).
Current NSW boat licence fees are:
- 1 year: $80
- 3 years: $227
- 5 years: $362
- 10 years: $701
If you are also applying for a PWC licence, the cost is higher.
Where people spend more than they expected
The biggest mistake is thinking the licence fee is the whole cost.
In reality, people often spend more when they:
- choose a more expensive face-to-face course without comparing options
- go into the Service NSW test unprepared
- fail the test and have to pay again
That is why the preparation step matters.
A lower-cost way to prepare
For many people, the most practical path is to prepare online, then sit the official test at Service NSW.
That gives you:
- flexibility to study in your own time
- a structured way to learn the rules
- practice before paying to sit the test
- a lower-cost path than face-to-face courses
Face-to-face in Bega and online across NSW
We still offer face-to-face boat licence courses in Bega for people who prefer in-person training.
We have also launched a new online NSW boat licence prep course for people who want a more flexible option.
The online course includes the full course content and quizzes to help you prepare properly before sitting your test at Service NSW.
For many people, that means a simpler path and a much lower overall cost.
Final word
If you want your NSW boat licence, the first thing to work out is which process applies to you.
- face-to-face course = test with the provider
- self-study = test at Service NSW
- online prep course = prepare online, then test at Service NSW
Once you understand that, the costs make much more sense and it is easier to choose the path that suits you.
If you want a flexible and affordable way to prepare, our online course is designed to help you get ready before booking your Service NSW test.
